UrbanPlan HK - Our Pandemic Journey (2020 - 2021)
We developed a pandemic-friendly format, not knowing the result would be set to become our preferred UrbanPlan-HK delivery model.

Opened in 1842 as Hong Kong’s first “wet market”, Central Market underwent many reincarnations in its 179 year lifetime to the four- storey Bauhaus structure engraved in Hongkongers’ memories. Famously captured by the late renowned photographer Fan Ho, the stories of Central Market revolved around the grand staircase that connected more than 200 shops from food vendors, tailors, and cleaners to money exchangers.
Chinachem Group had a mission to maintain the authenticity and cultural values of this landmark revitalization project, keeping it accessible to the community it once served and continuing its socioeconomic legacy for generations to come. Under Chinachem Group and Urban Renewal Authority’s joint effort, Central Market will be transformed into a “Playground for All”— where all walks of life can converge in a building of vibrant activities, collective memories, and a sense of community. We had a chance to preview Central Market and witness the final touch of transformation before this restored 80-year-old Grade 3 Historic Building soft opens to the public on Monday, August 23rd. With over 100 leasable units for cultural, affordable retail and F&B outlets incorporating multipurpose greenery and public space, this new destination in Central Hong Kong will be a popular meeting place and talk of the town.
